Journal: [personal profile] hallpasses
Name: Veronica Sawyer
Age: 17
Canon: Heathers – The Musical
Canon Point: End of show when she’s trying to mend fences with Martha and the remaining Heathers.

Canon World

This is the premise of the musical. It’s set in 1989 in a high school, going through the motions of senior year with a few added twists and inattentive teachers/police. Things are able to get pretty out of hand on a few different fronts without much intervention leading to murders, horrible rumors, and an almost bombing of the school.

It's fine. Who needs attentive adults? Definitely not anyone at Veronica's school.

History

LINK

Veronica has been going to school with most of the same kids she's now sharing her Senior Year with. It's a pretty normal setting with definitive cliques. She's a traditional nerd, keeps a diary, and does her best to stay out of the way of the more aggressive groups - like the football team. Veronica isn’t exactly a goody two-shoes, well-versed in forging hall passes, report cards, permission slips, and absence notes. While she's ready to go to college to get away from the immaturity and awfulness of most of her fellow teenagers, she does have hope that they'll change again and not be such assholes. After a chance meeting in the bathroom with a forged hall pass to keep them out of trouble, she earns a favor from the Heathers - a group all named Heather that basically run the school.

It starts her on a whirlwind adventure of a transformation into an honorary Heather, destroying her best friend's heart with a forged note from the guy she'd had a crush on since kindergarten, and sets her on the path of a very unhealthy relationship with Jason Dean - JD.

By the end of the show, Veronica had helped JD kill 3 people - Veronica having been the one to hand the cup of drain cleaner to Heather unknowingly. She’d also lured Ram and Kurt to the cemetery after they’d started a rumor that she’d slept with them around school, which had been devastating for her. JD had told her he was going to use ich lüge bullets – German for I lied – that would put them to sleep and not do any lasting damage.

They were all framed as suicides with forged notes from Veronica. She'd tried to get JD to stop, asking him to just be 17 with her and basically stop killing people... But it didn't work out. She'd also destroyed her best friend by fessing up on forging the note from Ram to keep Martha from trying to investigate JD. She tried to confess to the killings at the memorial, but no one believed her. She then was the only one to go after Heather McNamara when she'd been told by Heather Duke and others to kill herself because she was showing weakness - confessing she wasn't okay. JD mocked Veronica for being caring and told her the best kind of Heather was a dead Heather. She'd thought she'd gotten him back on the same page of not taking anymore lives until his father comes in and JD pulls a gun. He accidentally points it at Veronica and she breaks up with him on the spot.

Things continue to spiral when she learns that Martha had tried to kill herself by throwing herself off of a bridge. While she'd been visiting Martha, JD had stopped by her house and had given them a copy of Moby Dick with highlighted passages and dark thoughts in the margins in what appeared to be her handwriting, telling her parents she'd had thoughts of suicide. He then breaks into her room, the same way she'd first broken into his through the window, and shares his plans to blow up the school at the pep rally after telling her he's forgiven her for breaking up with him. He blames the school for her breaking up with him, thinking that getting rid of the school and everyone inside will fix everything. She fakes her own death by pretending to hang herself in the hopes that it might deter him and when that doesn't work, she follows him to the school to try and stop him. They ended up fighting, she shoots him with his own gun and is convinced she'd killed him.

Without a way to deactivate the bomb, she takes it to the football field and is ready to blow up with it - not believing she deserves to be alive. JD hadn't died from the gunshot wound and had followed her out to the field, taking the bomb and saying goodbye to her in his own way - giving his own life for hers.

She returns to the school after the explosion, taking the infamous red scrunchie that once belonged to Heather Chandler (who she helped kill accidentally) from Heather Duke and doing her best to reunite the groups and start her apologies and healing process with everyone, including her best friend Martha.

Personality

Veronica suffers from the same issues that most teenagers face: the desire to belong. She’s somewhat awkward, impulsive, emotional, and is going through that awful developmental stage into full-blown adulthood. She has big plans for college – trying to get into either Harvard, Duke, or Brown and sees the inherent good in almost everyone. She’s the type that firmly believes if someone changed once, they can change again for the better. Someone she saw the good in was her ex-boyfriend, JD – Jason Dean. To the point where it blinded her and allowed her to skew her own moral compass further than she had with the Heathers. Typically she's a nice person when it comes to interacting with others and does her best to stay out of other people's ways. But, she's not afraid to speak up and call people on their shit if it's unnecessary. Even in the face of danger. She stood up to Heather Chandler when the joke with Martha had gone too far, despite the consequences.

As nice as she might try to be, though, it sometimes conflicts with her longing to belong. It had pushed her to the Heathers and then straight into the arms of JD when that fell apart. She hadn't really found a sense of self yet, but she'd idolized how tough Heather Chandler appeared from the outside and it twisted the path she'd found herself on in a journey of self-discovery. Veronica had willingly left Martha behind for the chance to be one of the cool kids - even just for a week. Veronica broke school rules, something she’d possibly done before considering she was pretty good at forgeries, and outright lied to cover for the Heathers just for a chance to be one of the cool kids. She then broke into JD's room after everything went to hell in a handbasket at a party to have a chance of a night with him before the Heathers completely ruined her life in school on Monday. And even after Heather promised to ruin her life, a nightmare sent her scrambling back - literally getting on her knees to be for forgiveness.

With that dip into the darker end of the moral pool, she’d helped JD with killing 3 of their classmates before putting her foot down and trying to get him back on what she viewed as the correct path – just being kids and dealing with disruptions from bullies and life stressors with anything other than murder. As if she could control the spiral that had become her life and everything directly and indirectly effected by her choices.

If something makes her feel helpless or afraid, she'd rather face it head on than let it fester. There's always a way to fix a problem or conquer a fear - even if it's not the right or healthy way. She’d found justifications for hurting people, even if she hadn’t meant for them to lose their lives. JD had gone to an extreme to make people pay when they’d made her feel helpless or had hurt her and she hadn’t tried to stop him at first. And in turn, she’d gone to her own extreme to try and protect Martha after Heather, Kurt, and Ram’s deaths when she’d caught on that JD might be responsible. Veronica had fessed up that she’d been the one to forge the note from Ram inviting her to his homecoming party. She’d thought she was protecting Martha from the bigger danger of JD possibly killing her if she looked in his locker and instead it had driven her to attempt suicide.

There’s a theme that runs through her decisions, an extension of her need to belong: that desire to have a person. Whether it’s someone she can lean on and be best friends with or someone who will fight for her and protect her. Even after JD dies, she goes back to the school to find the remaining Heathers and Martha to try to mend burnt bridges - wanting to go back to having movie nights with Martha like they could just pick back up where they left off.

While she may have done some heinous things in the name of love and popularity, she was ready to give up her own life if it meant everyone else would survive. She took responsibility for setting JD on the path of mass destruction and was going to fix it, even if it was to an extreme. She seemed to mostly internalize the destruction JD wanted to inflict on everyone, believing she deserved to die with JD and end the nightmare. That belief that she didn't deserve to live isn't something easily rectified, but she'd gone back to the one stable support pillar in her group of friends... Martha.

Special Abilities

No supernatural abilities - she's a very good forger, quick thinker, and is book smart enough to be applying to Ivy League colleges.

Sample Network Post:

[ Veronica had taken a little downtime, adjusting to the idea of living in an abandoned town with no idea when she'd get to go home. She'd had her own meltdown once the dust settled and she'd stopped moving long enough for the weight of everything to hit her full force. Between seeing JD again and everything happening here, needed something that wasn't complicated to occupy her mind for a little bit.

It had taken more than a few tries, a false start or two popping up before she successfully began recording. ]
H-hi.

[ God, she was usually better at talking. Alright, focus Veronica. ]

Guess I figured I'd ask before heading out, but does anyone know if there are any supplies left in the school? Like paper, pen or pencils... That kind of stuff?

[ Better to not waste time around here, if her guess was right. She just kind of stares for a moment, looking off to the side awkwardly before sighing and ending the feed. Veronica realized she hadn't introduced herself or said thank you, debating if she should start another one before giving up and waiting. ]

Last she'd thought, she'd gotten back into the school. But, then there's fog and a package and... a letter from a Father Bartholemew? She's not really sure how, but her feet slowly find their way to the Lutheran Church. Veronica is still limping, her left leg needing time to heal after the fight with JD, but she gets inside without help. She tries to listen to the Father speak, doing her best to focus on the words rather than his scars or the smile that had made the hair on the back of her neck stand up. Veronica had wanted answers, it was just too bad that ones she got didn't actually answer any of her questions. Her own mind begins to spin, thoughts flooding her mind at an overwhelming speed.

Maybe this some Persephone shit where eating the food would keep her here forever. Maybe she was actually dead or she'd hit her head really hard and was hallucinating. Fingers fumble at her hair, pulling the red scrunchie and holding it tightly as if it might disappear. Shaking her head, she puts the scrunchie on the table - trying to keep her composure. Fingers run through the brown locks, eyes closed and brows knit as she listens. Her blue blazer stands out against the black and red of the hooded people around her, not doing well with attempting to blend in while doing her best to not freak out. She knows she looks like shit because she can feel it in her bones, pretty sure her body is still shaking from the vibrations of the explosion.

All she knew from his little talk was one thing: this wasn't her problem if it was real. She was tapped out - done fighting. Veronica doesn't sit yet, instead picking up one of the bottles of wine - bypassing a glass entirely. She takes a long swig - wiping at her mouth with the back of her hand. She'd taken a guess that he meant that none of the bottles on the table are poisoned, but honestly... She doesn't care. What a way to go. Survive her ex-boyfriend trying to blow up the school only to get taken out by a bottle of wine.

There were definitely worse ways to go.
